BUTLER COUNTY, OHIO - RFID

RFID Companies in the Cincinnati ~ Dayton Region
A total of 37 RFID technology user and provider companies are located in the Cincinnati – Dayton region.  For 32 of these companies, the region is home to their corporate headquarter locations.

Key RFID users and decision makers like Procter & Gamble, Kroger, Federated Department Stores, DHL, and the Department of Defense procurement center and R&D labs at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base are headquartered in the Cincinnati – Dayton region.  The presence of significant RFID technology providers like Alien Technologies, NCR, Paxar, Teradata, and CDO Technologies make the region already a RFID cluster.  In addition, the largest concentration of U.S. EPCglobal (the governing body of RFID) employees is located in Dayton making this region a true cluster for RFID technology.

Ten Fortune 500 companies and Nine Fortune 1000 companies call the Cincinnati – Dayton region home.  In addition, significant barcode development occurred in southwest Ohio.  A pack of Wrigley gum scanned at a Troy, Ohio Marsh grocery store in 1974 was the first commercial application.

Southwest Ohio is rich in advanced technology and research and development.  There are 14 research centers specializing in fields of study from biomedical engineering and energy systems to membrane technology and aerospace.  These include Wright-Patterson Air Force Base (the USAF R&D center, University of Cincinnati Research Center,

University of Dayton Research Institute, Mound Advanced Technology Center, Advanced Integrated Manufacturing Center, and P&G’s Worldwide Center for Health Care Research.

The Cincinnati – Dayton region has a large, knowledge-based workforce of more than 1.54 million workers.  This includes 25,750 working scientists and engineers -- more than work in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina -- and a total of 40,000 working scientists and engineers within a 50 mile radius.  In Butler County 58% of the population 25 and older has some college, an associate's degree, a bachelor's degree, or a graduate or professional degree.

There are 840,000 students enrolled at more than 250 colleges and universities within a 200-mile radius of the region that add more than 140,000 young, degreed professionals to the workforce each year.  Twenty-four colleges, six branch campuses, and seven community colleges with career and technical curriculums are located in the Dayton – Cincinnati region.  In addition, Dayton’s Wright State University offers a new Master of Science Degree program in Logistics and Supply Chain Management.

Both Cincinnati and Dayton have excellent international airports and are located at the center of the largest 90-minute air travel market in the U.S., reaching 70 percent of the nation’s wage earners.  For people who must fly regularly, this means shorter flight times, reduced airfares, more productive days, and fewer overnight stays.  A total 750 daily departures including 157 non-stop flights are available.

With the mean U.S. existing home price at $20,800 and Cincinnati and Dayton median home prices at $145,300 and $121,400 respectively, home prices here are among the lowest of any metro area, below the Midwest mean price of $170,800, and dramatically less than either the east or west coasts.  There is affordable housing for every income level in Butler County and the Cincinnati – Dayton region.

In addition, the Vora Technology Park campus in Butler County and its data center provide 366,000 sq. ft. of ideal Class A office space for first-tier RFID technology companies, satellite offices, as well as RFID incubators.

With mandates from major retailers and the Department of Defense, many manufacturers are eager to acquire a radio frequency identification (RFID) capability.  However, a recent Accenture survey of manufacturers indicates that 66% of respondents were not convinced of RFID’s benefits.  Would RFID be viable and beneficial for you?  That is a question that requires extensive evaluation of your site and a thorough cost/benefit analysis.  Most analysts agree that the high cost of the RFID tags and lack of industry standards will slow widespread implementation.  Nonetheless, Standard Register’s RFID technology team can assist in applications assessment and develop a plan that allows companies to achieve greater efficiencies now through today’s proven technologies while preparing you to transition to tomorrow’s technologies.  The company’s partners include: Accenture, Adobe, ADP Dealer Services, CHC Healthcare, CSC (Computer Sciences Corporation), HP, IBM, Lexmark, Microsoft, Nokia, PeopleSoft, Pitney Bowes, and Siebel.

At ASC we have carefully tracked the RFID evolutionary process and have strategically aligned ourselves with some of the original pioneers of RFID technology.  By leveraging the strengths of our hardware partners, combined with our vast knowledge of global systems, systems interfacing, and the overall physics and engineering of RFID, we have assembled an impressive arsenal of RFID solutions.

Whether your needs are simply a stand-alone “tag-and-ship” requirement for EPC or DOD compliance, or a complete closed loop or open standards tracking system for your enterprise, ASC has the expertise to provide you with a complete RFID solution.

ASC's WMS software comes standard with RFID EPC Global tag creation ability already enabled right out-of-the-box.  No other company in the WMS market place can say that as most companies are selling add-on modules.  This is the "tag-and-ship" concept, and ASC also includes populating the data in the required EDI fields.  ASC feels that this should be included in any automatic ID system, and this improves your bottom line!

For clients that need additional in-bound tracking or RFID scanning solutions, these solutions are tailored to each client for dock door pallet scanning, or for case level scanning. Contact us for more details as this requires additional hardware for scanning.

Pro Mach’s ID Technology offers multiple RFID solutions to help you achieve the greatest ROI whether you need to meet basic retailer compliance or want to exploit the benefits of RFID throughout your manufacturing process.  The ID Technology Model 150 Label Applicator is ideal for applying pressure sensitive RFID tags to cases, cartons or individual products.  These tags can be pre-encoded or can be encoded later in the packaging process, after application.  A unique angled U-arm allows easy positioning of the applicator head to the product for top, bottom, and side applications.

RFID and bar coding will coexist for the foreseeable future.  New ID Technology RFID label printer applicators combine these two technologies for the best of both worlds. These printers are able to print barcodes, human-readable text, and graphics on the surface of a label and then encode the RFID chip embedded as part of the label.  The ID Technology Model 250r is designed to read, write, verify and apply RFID tags in top, bottom, and side label applications all as one seamless process.  Tags that fail to read can be discarded prior to application without disrupting product flow.

The Model 250r features the same rugged design and modular configuration as the original IDT 250 Series printer applicator, as well as, "hot swap" spare assemblies that install in minutes.  I D Technology offers a choice of Zebra, Sato and Datamax RFID print engines.  The result is an RFID enabled printer applicator that adapts to your production environment.  Because of its unique modular design a standard Model 250 Printer Applicator can be easily upgraded for RFID applications by simply swapping the standard print engine with an RFID print engine.
